Three field experiments were carried out in three different locations in the Red River
Delta during three cropping seasons in year 2000 to determine the planting density for
soybean cv. D140. Population density exerted significant effect on leaf area index, dry
matter accumulation, number of branches, number of seeds per pod, 1000 seeds weight
and grain yield. The planting densities of 45 plants per square meter in spring and winter
crops and 35 plants per sqaure meter in summer season seemed to be optimal for
soybean cv. D140 under Red River Delta farming conditions.
