SUMMARY Postharvest losses of mangoes Namdokmai were assessed in Bangkok, Thailand. Fungi causing mango postharvest diseases were isolated as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Lasiodiplodia theobromae, Dothiorella sp., D. dominicana, D. mangiferae and Phomopsis mangiferae, Aspergillus sp., A. niger and Penicillium sp. C. gloeosporioides and L. theobromae were the most popular fungi causing fruit anthracnose and stem-end rot, respectively. Survey on fruit decayed by these diseases was carried out to define mango marketability at retail level. Three marketability levels were settled as marketable, low marketable, and unmarketable fruits based on diseases severity of <1%, 1-10%, and >10%, respectively. These marketability levels were used as indicators to assess postharvest losses of mangoes Namdokmai obtained from Talad Tai wholesale market in 2001 and 2002. The losses might grow up to 27.1-46.0% due to anthracnose or 22.4-30.9% due to stem-end rot at retail market level. Preharvest practices, harvest measures and postharvest handling were also suggested to lessen postharvest losses. Keywords: Mango, postharvest loss, anthracnose, stem-end rot.
